FAQS

We often get asked the same questions, so we’ve made a list for you here of the most common ones.

+ Where is Downland Produce located?

We’re based in a professional butchery unit on an industrial estate near Melksham, Wiltshire (SN12 6ZE), surrounded by beautiful countryside. We don’t operate a traditional walk-in shop, but customers are welcome to collect pre-ordered meat from our unit.

+ Do you sell to the public or only wholesale?

Both.
We supply wholesale customers (restaurants, schools, care homes, farm shops, delis, etc.) and sell directly to the public through our website.

+ Do I need to order online, or can I just turn up?

We strongly recommend ordering online.
Our butchers start early (around 5am) and may finish by midday, so placing an order in advance ensures your meat is cut, packed, and ready. Collection is available at checkout on selected dates.

+ Can I order online for home delivery?

Yes. You can order online for:
local delivery
or nationwide courier delivery across mainland UK
Collection is also available at checkout.

+ Is your meat free range or grass-fed?

This depends on the product, and we’re clear about it on each listing:
Free-range poultry is free range
Lamb in the UK is naturally grass-fed
Beef is grass-fed and locally sourced (including from the local agricultural college)
Pigs are not grass-fed, as this isn’t typical of pig diets
Each product page tells you exactly how the animal was reared.

+ What makes your meat different?

We work closely with trusted local farmers in Wiltshire and the South West, prioritising:
high welfare standards
traditional husbandry
dry-ageing for beef
careful butchery
The result is consistently better flavour, texture, and traceability.

+ Are your meats organic?

We’re not certified organic.
However, we focus on ethical, sustainable farming and high animal welfare, which for many customers matters more than certification alone.

+ Are your meats ethically sourced?

Yes. Ethical sourcing is a core value for us. We partner with farmers who prioritise animal welfare, responsible land management, and good husbandry.

+ Are your meats halal or kosher?

We are not a halal- or kosher-certified business.
All animals supplied by Downland Produce are slaughtered in licensed UK abattoirs and stunned in accordance with UK animal welfare legislation.
We’re always happy to discuss animal welfare standards and UK law, but we don’t engage in religious debate or commentary about belief, blessing, or faith preferences.

+ Do you use stunning before slaughter?

Yes. All animals supplied by us are slaughtered in licensed UK abattoirs and stunned in line with UK animal welfare legislation.

+ Can I request custom cuts or portion sizes?

Absolutely. Our butchers are happy to prepare custom cuts or portion sizes where possible. Just add a note to your order or contact us.

+ Are your sausages gluten-free?

Yes. We offer gluten-free sausages, burgers, marinades, and kebabs. Please check individual product pages for allergen details.

+ What is dry-ageing?

Our beef is dry-aged in a carefully controlled environment, allowing natural enzymes to break down muscle fibres. This improves tenderness and depth of flavour.

+ How do you smoke your bacon and ham?

We use a purpose-built smoking room and traditional methods, smoking with local oak shavings for an authentic, balanced flavour.

+ Do you sell meat packs?

Yes. Our meat packs are curated to make meal planning easy and offer great value across a range of cuts.

+ Do you offer meat for special occasions?

Yes. We offer seasonal products such as:
Christmas turkeys
seasonal game (when in season)
roasting joints and celebration cuts

+ Do you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes. All products are clearly labelled with allergen information to help customers make informed choices.

+ Do you offer environmentally friendly packaging?

Yes. We actively work to reduce waste and use eco-conscious packaging wherever possible.

+ Can I visit the farm or butchery?

Customers are welcome to collect orders from our butchery unit. Farm visits are subject to arrangement directly with the farmers and by appointment.

+ Still have a question?
